#1 WHEN TO WATER YOUR LAWN AND HOW OFTEN.
During the dry hot times of the year, it is better to water in early mornings for an hour three times a week. This is better for your lawn than watering 10 to 15 minutes every day. The reason is that it gives moisture a chance to go deep which will root your plant deeper. The deeper the grass roots the stronger the lawn. If you water every day for 10 minutes, the grass roots will stay at the surface. When the heat of the day comes, the grass roots get hot and dry and starts dying off because its stressed. So remember, water for about an hour three times a week.
#2 FERTILIZE YOUR LAWN.
You should fertilize your lawn up to 5 times a year. At minimum, you want to fertilize 3 times a year, spring, summer, and fall. The addition of two additional applications at late spring and early fall will enhance your lawn’s nutrition and lush appearance. Always be sure to get a fall application done to help your lawn prepare for winter. When the grass stops growing because of colder temps the grass roots keep growing because the soil temp is still warmer then the air temp. So, fertilizing in the fall will help keep a greener lawn all spring and summer.
#3 GRASS LENGTH.
You want to leave the grass longer in the hot months of the year than in the spring of the year. The reason for that is the taller grass acts as shade so the ground can keep moisture in, and so the sun can’t hit the roots of the grass plant.
#4 LESS NITROGEN
Most advertised lawn fertilizer has large amounts of nitrogen, which makes your lawn grow fast but weak. It will green up fast, but it will be more vulnerable to dry times and disease.
